Project Description

This project consisted of modifications and repairs to the existing substructure and replacement of the steel truss spans over the Escanaba River and E & LS railroad.

The existing substructure limestone masonry block piers and open bent concrete caps were reconfigured to accommodate the nine open deck DPG spans and the single TPG span. A 645’ causeway/temporary bridge was installed to provide access for the removal and replacement of the existing truss spans. The spans were changed out in five twelve hour track windows.

NOTABLE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Completion of substructure modifications while maintaining traffic on the existing structure. All work completed in natural windows vs. dedicated track windows
  • Construction of a causeway and temporary bridges to cross over shallow wetlands an environmentally sensitive river
  • Material handling and storage along with equipment staging logistics on a narrow one lane access platform
