Lunda Construction was part of the Joint Venture, Marquette Constructors (MC), which was awarded the project to rebuild the Marquette Interchange in downtown Milwaukee, WI. The construction of the new multi-level freeway interchange required complex staged structure demolition and new girder erection above and below existing and new structures while maintaining interstate traffic. The project also required working over active railroad tracks, river canals, We Energies’ Power Plant operations and above ground steam lines.

Work included demolition of 92 existing bridge units (consisting of voided concrete box girder, voided slab, prestressed beam and steel plate girder bridges), construction of 10 steel tub girder bridge units, 16 steel plate girder bridge units, 22 prestressed bridge units, 18 retaining walls and 6 temporary bridges. The new structure work required 373,931 LF of driven pile, 152,512 cubic yards of structural concrete, 23,317 tons of structural steel, 94,771 linear feet of prestressed concrete beams and 38,382 LF drilled shafts.MC created an extensive CPM schedule to monitor and maintain construction activities, shop drawing development, material procurement, utility relocations and traffic impacts.

An OCIP program was implemented for the Marquette Interchange Project. MC was challenged by the WisDOT Transportation Secretary to complete a quality project safely, on time and on budget. MC exceeded the challenge by completing the new interchange safely, months ahead of schedule and under budget.
