The Crosstown Commons Project included 29 bridges, six of which were Precast Concrete Box Structures constructed using the balanced cantilever method. Including all six structures, Lunda cast 461 segments that were 8 ft. tall, 8 ft. long, ranged in width from 45’ to 55’, and weighed up to 80 tons. One of the biggest challenges and risks was finding a location large enough for a Precast Yard and would allow efficient transportation of the segments to the project site. The project is located in one of the busiest traffic corridors in the Minneapolis/St. Paul metro area. Lunda considered multiple sites, however, decided on our own facility located on TH52 in Rosemount, MN due in part to its access to the State Highway System. Even with the access to the State Highway System from our Precast Yard, getting the segments to the site was a challenge with traffic. To mitigate the risks of hauling and erecting segments during peak traffic hours, Lunda analyzed the delivery locations and developed a plan to deliver and erect segments at all hours of the day and night depending on the structure location. This allowed the work to progress as scheduled.
